anatomy of an apology

the seconds turn into minutes turn into hours

sunrise becomes high noon

as I look out the window

the day passes by

time: limited

the clock: on a countdown

to our next goodbye

finally the phone rings

signalling his return

he is a ray of light, he is

moving a million miles an hour

my silence does not go unnoticed.

when he asks, I reply

blinking back tears

as the words tumble out

heart: racing

hands: shaking

with anger and shame

he listens. arms wrapped

around me.

silent, he listens

until I am finished

everything stops, the clock making room for us

as he kisses the tears on my cheeks

and slows my erratic pulse with a few words

time: ours, again

heart: his, always

in daylight and moonlight and beyond
